Notice to Union Members Regarding Upcoming Elections and Voting Eligibility

Notice to Members

Coming up in February our local will have nominations for all offices, and if necessary elections in March. As per the CUPE Constitution all members that want to run for a position, or vote in an election, must be a Member in Good Standing.

In order to become a Member in Good Standing, fill out the following form and send it back to the local. Email it to MIGS@cupe815.org, text it to 289-439-1870, or hand it to a steward in your area.

How do I know if I'm a Member in Good Standing?

To help make sure everything is in order, a test ballot will be sent out later this month. This is an important step to confirm:

  • That you are listed as a member in good standing, and

  • That we have your preferred email address on file for voting

If you do not receive a test ballot, or if it is sent to an email address you no longer use or prefer, please reach out to the local as soon as possible, MIGS@cupe815.org, so we can correct it before any official votes take place.

Why are we making this change?

Under the CUPE Constitution, voting rights are reserved for members in good standing. A member in good standing is one who has signed a membership application form and is not in arrears of dues.

In the past, our local has used different methods for ballots in order to be as inclusive as possible. However, this approach created challenges, including ballots being sent to individuals who were not eligible to vote under the Constitution. This can lead to confusion, delays, and potential challenges to the validity of the vote.

To ensure our processes are fair, transparent, and constitutionally compliant, we are updating our balloting process so that ballots are sent only to members in good standing at the time of the vote.

This change helps to:

  • Protect the integrity of our votes

  • Ensure compliance with the CUPE Constitution

  • Avoid disputed or invalid ballots

  • Provide clarity and consistency for members

This change is not intended to exclude members. Rather, it reinforces the importance of maintaining membership status and ensures that all votes reflect the will of eligible members.

In Solidarity

About CUPE 815

CUPE 815 represents more than 1500 healthcare support workers from Halton Healthcare Milton and Oakville sites.

These workers include RPNs, Unit Clerks, Trades People, Food Services, MDR, Stores, and Housekeeping.

CUPE advocates for workers who deliver the public services people depend on. Our members work in hospitals, schools, municipalities, and many other public spaces.

We help our members provide the highest level of service by ensuring they are safe and healthy at work, and that they get fair pay and benefits for the services they provide.

We also advocate for better public services, like improvements to public health care and to the Canada Pension Plan, that would improve our communities and the lives all Canadians.

We acknowledge that Halton Region is on the traditional territory of Indigenous peoples, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, and we are grateful to share this land today.
